Gunnar Skrevet September 27, 2003 Share Skrevet September 27, 2003 14 years on, the mighty BMW 6 Series returns 07/09/2003 Details of BMW's new 6 Series are announced for the first time today. Debuting alongside the X3 at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show, the new BMW 645Ci Coupé promises power and performance within a breathtaking, contemporary design. This is the first BMW Coupé to wear the legendary 6 Series badge since 1989. And though it carries the heritage of its predecessor, the new model moves the BMW 6 Series on a generation offering a mouth-watering combination of: ... 4.4-litre V8 power unit with VALVETRONIC ... Choice of three different six-speed transmissions, including SMG gearbox ... Intelligent use of lightweight materials ... Class-leading specification and ground-breaking options Contemporary Design Employing modern BMW design language, the new 6 Series is a luxury Coupe for the 21st century, exuding road presence and dynamism typical of a BMW Coupé. The car is 4,820mm (189.8") long, 1,855mm (73.0") wide, and 1,373mm (54.1") high, with a power dome on the bonnet, low roof line, and contoured front and side panels, giving it a dynamic and elegant stance. Fluent exterior lines are reflected in a sporty interior. Core driving functions are located on or around the steering wheel while the iDrive controller, which accesses most of the vehicle's secondary and comfort functions, is within easy and convenient reach of driver and front seat passenger. Owners can also specify a panorama roof option which is larger than a normal electric sunroof, adding light and clarity to its luxurious interior. The power and the glory Power and refinement come as standard. At launch, the 6 Series will feature the 4.4-litre engine with VALVETRONIC which lies at the heart of BMW's luxury 745i model. Its V8 power plant produces an effortless 0-62 mph time of just 5.6 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. This engine produces a maximum power output of 333 bhp and develops 332 lb-ft (450Nm) of torque at 3,600 rpm. Rear wheel drive Complementing the powerful engine is a choice of three different six-speed gearboxes, which transmit power to the rear wheels in traditional BMW style. As well as a manual six-speed transmission, the new BMW 645Ci comes with an optional six-speed automatic with Steptronic. For those with a taste for Formula 1 shifting, there is also a Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) with steering wheel paddles and gearshift lever. Driving Dynamics Control (DDC) is similar to the sport function on BMW M3 and M5 models. Operated by a 'Sport' button on the centre console, DDC sharpens up throttle reaction for more responsive acceleration, as well as producing a more direct feel from the speed-related, power-assisted steering. When fitted with SMG or the Steptronic automatic, DDC also shifts gears at higher revs, changing ratios in a lightning 150 milliseconds. Lightweight materials, heavyweight thinking Weighing just 1,600 kg or 3,528 lbs, the new 6 Series uses a combination of aluminium, steel and synthetic materials, making a significant contribution to driving performance, with the added benefit of improved fuel economy. The bonnet, doors and entire front body structure are made of aluminium. Front wings are fashioned from thermoplastic while the boot lid is made of sheet moulding compound (SMC). Chassis and suspension Accomplished handling comes courtesy of trademark 50:50 weight distribution and all-aluminium chassis and suspension. In addition, key BMW driver aids Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) provide a standard 'safety net' to keep the car going in the intended direction. Dynamic Drive and Active Steering can be specified as 6 Series options, further enhancing the driving experience. Virtually eliminating body roll in bends, Dynamic Drive features step motors which build up counter forces on the car's anti-roll bars, improving ride comfort while cornering. Active Steering uses a step motor to vary steering ratio according to speed. At low speeds agility is enhanced, with less steering wheel input required for a sharper turning angle. This makes the vehicle easier to manoeuvre in situations where drivers most need assistance, such as town driving or parking in tight spaces. As speed increases the steering becomes progressively more indirect and firm, enhancing stability and comfort, and ensuring smooth and precise handling. Punctures used to leave drivers stranded by the roadside, waiting for help or facing the prospect of a wheel change. However, with run-flat tyres as standard, 6 Series drivers can continue to drive for up to 90 miles at 50 mph, reaching a safe destination or garage with minimum inconvenience. Consider the options The new 6 Series boasts a range of state-of-the-art innovations as options which boost the appeal of an already impressive car. Active Cruise Control (ACC) is more 'intelligent' than normal cruise control, keeping the car at a pre-selected speed but monitoring traffic ahead to ensure a programmed distance is maintained. If a car pulls out in front, or lane speed suddenly slows, ACC automatically adjusts speed, braking if necessary. The system then accelerates again when a safe distance has been reached. Adaptive Headlights improve visibility, allowing drivers to 'see' round corners. Swivelling by up to 15 degrees, headlamps turn towards the direction the vehicle is steering rather than where it is pointing. This illuminates more of the road ahead, allowing earlier recognition of any obstacles or pedestrians. Bringing aircraft technology to the 6 Series, BMW debuts Head-up Display (HUD) in March 2004. HUD projects a host of salient information directly onto the windscreen, including navigation directions, speed and Active Cruise Control display. The transparent display promises to reduce fatigue over long journeys, as drivers need take their eyes off the road less often. It also enhances safety, warning of any hazard or failure, like an open door or lamp failure, as soon as it happens via Check Control messages. Space and sound As well as ample room for occupants, the new 6 Series features the largest luggage compartment in its class, with enough space for two golf bags and a suitcase. Automatic air conditioning and a hi-fi audio system, matching top-of-the-range home entertainment system quality, come as standard. Coming soon Available in the UK from December 2003, the BMW 645Ci will be supplemented by a convertible model in 2004. On-the-road prices and standard specification will be confirmed later.
