What it takes to transform a 320i into a Hartge H3:

First you need the Hartge emblem and the H-3 emblem and they are no longer available. You have to have them made and it costs about $100 per emblem as they are laser cut and computer coloured.

You need the front valance which is no longer available but perhaps one could be found used (in Europe?).

The correct rear spoiler is the FOHA unit which I tossed and replaced with a Hartge E-30 unit. Those can be found still.

The suspension has to be changed to the Hartge/Bilstein units. These units (with springs) ARE NOT AVAILABLE FROM BILSTIEN and are a Hartge specific item. They too can be found used in Europe. Bilstein of America will rebuild them for you although there is not a warranty on them; even when new, Bilstein would not warrantee them!

Hartge used rear disc brakes off from a 323i which you can pick up. They are stock.

The front brakes that Hartge offered are called Group II and essentially are Girling Volvo units that are modified a bit.

The large master cylinder from a 528 is used and dual brake lines are run to each front caliper.

You also need the ventilated rotors off from a 1977 320i.

Of course the metallic body side stripes are important. (Still available - see E21 page on this website - supply is limited)

The seats in a Hartge were the Recaro option that you can pick up from eBay.

Hartge has their own steering wheel that I have seen several times on eBay.

They used their own shift knob. (Still available - see ACCESSORIES page)

The two instruments (tach and speedo) have a Hartge emblem on them that can be made same as the exterior emblems. The tach face will need to be changed with a 323i face as your customer needs the red and green face. That is an easy swap. The correct tach face is only found on the 6 cylinder 323i.

Wheels need to be Hartge. Hartge originally used 15 inch BBS basket weave wheels. It was just a popular change to put the HARTGE E30 wheels on the E21 chassis when Hartge created the (11 spoke Design A) OZ wheel. One has to use the 15 inch wheels if one was going to install the special brake set. Hartge offered both a 14 and 15 inch Design A wheel - but it's wiser in this day and age to buy the larger ones if possible!

Incidentally, the front valence can be used with the American bumper but one should convert to the European "thin" bumper.

The rear side marker lights need to be removed and the holes filled in. Of course it goes with out saying, the gas gauge needs to be replaced with the "metric" unit.

The center and left side dash panels need to be exchanged with ones printed in German; you can find them in Europe and Maximillian can also get them for you.

The right mirror needs to be exchanged with the glass from the drivers side.

The under hood stress bar is a necessity. (still available - see E21 page on this website)

Those changes would get him a close replica.

to Hartge's grind. I do not know who created it for them or even the lift or duration.

Also included in the H-3 conversion was Hartge's special exhaust system. It was not stainless and I can vouch for the fact that it would rust out soon here in Michigan.

Of course he can go further with the mono wiper (hard to find but . . .), VIN tag, and a raft of other "little" items that Hartge offered. The silver trim that runs in the windshield channel and the rear window (this is the locking strip) needs to be changed to black; only the US models had the crummy silver trim. Maximillian can get the locking strip; it is the same as an E-30 and is readily available although a US dealer cannot get it as it was Europe only.

Inform your customer that he is going to have to pony up a ton of cash for this conversion . . . the parts and NOT plentiful and are not inexpensive to purchase and/or to have made.

Reg's comments on how to (try to) document the history of an early HARTGE E21:

First you have to realize that most Hartge conversions were done on the E21 by independent garages who purchased the Hartge "tuner" parts, with the main one being a BMW dealer in Aachen (Germany) that HARTGE originally associated with.

It was later and primarily to my understanding that Hartge did a lot of conversions on the 5 series in house. The E21 H3 (323i) was Hartge's first iteration of their special parts and a number of dealers would 'Hartgeize' an auto in-house, and Hartge also sold the parts individually.

So . . . the way to document an early auto is simply by the presence of all authentic Hartge parts on it.

The H3 designation consisted of engine head along with suspension

upgrades.

From there, an individual could add the header/exhaust system, gauges, mirrors, brakes, fuel tank, quick ratio steering, stripes, valve cover, etc. (see details above!)

Lastly, the official HARTGE VIN "tag" itself was/is approximately 1&1/2 x 3 inches and included the BMW VIN along with weight of the vehicle in KG and the front/rear weights. It is aluminum and riveted with two rivets under the hood and in a conspicuous place.
