Help EU kontrol understanding

Hei,

I've had some bad news from EU kontroll and I would like to ask for a little help maybe can solve some of the problems.

1. Defekt foring. Begge sider, Indre, Bakre, 1 Aksel, casterstag foring.

This I think means casterstag on the front Axel both sides. But I don't understand Indre, Bakre if there are 2 items or?

2.8.2.1.2 Avgassutslipp og lambdaverdi - CO utslipp overstiger generelle grenseverdier.... Anyone knows potential solution. I know of lambda sensor but some help is welcome.

3. 8.2.3.1 Avgass generelt og motgangen - OBD feil indikator indikerer feil eller svikt ved systemet.

Here I think they refer to check engine light that is on in dashboard. This comes and goes so is not always on, and no difference in driving so can be some sensor only.

The car is a E39 540i from 2001.

Thanks.

1.) Indre = Inner. Bakre = Rear. Probably number 6 on the first picture. It is quite common that these fail over time. Recommend to replace entire arm. (5).

2.) and 3.) Sounds like it could be a faulty lamda sensor, and these (faulty emission reading and engine lamp) may very well be related. But this need to be diagnosed to be certain. Many factors can result in symptoms of bad combustion. Air leak on intake side, throttle body, cam sensor, MAF sensor and so on.

1) 1. aksel = front axle, inner = bushing closer to the middle of the car (in relation to the side of the car), bakre = arm that is the most in the rear (of front axle), common to name it like that on the multilink suspension.

2) Fix the sensor

3) Fix whatever the reason for the check engine light

1. Indre bakre refers to where the defective component is located on the car.

One bushing on each side

(number 6 in the top picture)

2. This can be tricky, but you should start with diagnosing the check engine-light.

How old are the oil, air filter and spark plugs?

3. This is wrong.

Cars registered before january 1st 2002 should not get a fault because of Check Engine lamp.

Thank for the quick reply.

This no 3. Mention about the check engine light is interesting. If this is actually specified somewhere and I can find it online please let me know. On previous EU kontroll, 2 years ago, done on another workshop they had no mention about this and was the same. Emissions I think we're also the same. Ive used the car no more than 1000km in last 2 years.

Then I have bought this Biltema BMW diagnose. This seems to be the exact same tool as Ancell BM700 and few others. Probably same chinese tools sold under different brands for more money.

I'll give it a scan in the evening and hopefully will tell me about lambda sensor more. I see there should be 4 of them and woul be nice to know before starting to replace.

I have got a lambda sensor error and camshaft position sensor error. I have ordered both and a new set of sparkplugs.

This to improve CO utslipp.

WIth emissions I know they are dependent on engine temperature and I suspect the engine wasn't warm enough when the test was made. Is there a place on Norwegian rules to see emissions numbers for specific car? Standard  I found on Google.

When i put E39 540i into Autodata (common sourche on emissions in workshops) i only get the standard figures.

0,5 at idle and 0,3 at 2000rpm.

And yes it helps to have a good temperature on the engine.

While waiting fort the parts to arrive (ordered from www....) I have received an offer for repair.

But my understanding they refer to different bushing in the offer, motor mount bushing? While in the report it is suspension arm bushing. Do I understand well?

Probably a typo from the workshop. Description in heading is correct. But you culd get verified thet the estimated work cost is for wishbone bushings replacement and not motor mounts replacement. (Not that the work scope differs that much, but still....)

  • 1 month later...

To have an ending to this topic, I have got the car approved after replacing few parts: bushings I used Powerflex, they are very very easy to install. I have alo Meyle but these are very difficult to install so I gave up and used Powerflex.

Then I replaced camshaft sensor, lbda, I have cleaned the El contacts and no more error shown. Also a full service, oil, filters, spark plugs.

Doing all these got the car approved with naf.
